Atmospheric Pollution & Human Health in an Indian Megacity- Announcement of Opportunity: Initial Proposals

Pollution in Indian cities is rapidly increasing, which can have significant impacts on the economy and health of the population. To address the problem of air pollution hazards and impacts on health in a rapidly urbanising society and to support cost-effective measures for air quality improvements related to anthropogenic pollutants in a mega city of India, a strategic research programme has been launched jointly by the Earth System Science Organization, Ministry of Earth Sciences (ESSO-MoES) and Department for Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India (GoI) and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Medical Research Council (MRC) of the United Kingdom.

A Scoping Workshop on Atmospheric Pollution and its Impact was organized during 11-13 May 2015 in New Delhi to facilitate networking, discussion and enable researchers to share ideas on key research questions in the area of atmospheric pollution and human health which will contribute in improving air quality in Delhi. Following this, an Implementation Agreement (IA) on Atmospheric Pollution and Human Health in an Indian Megacity was signed between ESSO-MoES and DBT from India and NERC and MRC from UK. This IA is part of the existing umbrella agreement between ESSO-MoES, India and NERC, UK on Technical Cooperation Earth Sciences signed in March 2013.

Towards this direction an Announcement of Opportunity for inviting initial proposals from Indian and UK scientists is being published under the following themes:

  1. emission validation and sources
  2. processes: physical and chemical
  3. exposure validation and health outcomes
  4. Mitigations and interventions
