The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) was established in November 1993 as an autonomous institute under the Department of Ocean Development with an objective of technology development and demonstration applicable to ocean and coastal areas. NIOT is also interacting with coastal industries by providing consultancy services for the design and implementation of coastal and offshore projects. NIOT has been working on time-bound technology related activities in 4 mission areas viz. Ocean Energy, Deep sea technology and ocean mining, Coastal and Environmental Engineering and Marine Instrumentation. This year, new activities have been started in a new mission area, namely `Island Development'.
