Inter-governmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) established in 1960
under UNESCO is promoting ocean science and services globally and capacity
building in developing countries, through the concerted efforts of the 127 member
states. India is a member of IOC and presently a member in its Executive
Council. Secretary, DOD led the Indian delegation to the 33rd Session of
Executive Council of IOC held at Paris during 20-25 June 2000. The Sub-Regional
Project on Storm Surge Disaster Mitigation in the Northern Indian Ocean initiated
by IOC, World Meteorological Organisation and International Hydrology
Programme of UNESCO was presented to the Executive Council by Secretary, DOD
and a resolution was adopted indicating the further course of action for
implementing the programme. Being an advanced country in oceanographic
