10.3 Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission



Inter-governmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) established in 1960 under UNESCO is promoting ocean science and services globally and capacity building in developing countries, through the concerted efforts of the 127 member states. India is a member of IOC and presently a member in its Executive Council. Secretary, DOD led the Indian delegation to the 33rd Session of Executive Council of IOC held at Paris during 20-25 June 2000. The Sub-Regional Project on Storm Surge Disaster Mitigation in the Northern Indian Ocean initiated by IOC, World Meteorological Organisation and International Hydrology Programme of UNESCO was presented to the Executive Council by Secretary, DOD and a resolution was adopted indicating the further course of action for implementing the programme. Being an advanced country in oceanographic research, India is a contributor to the cause of the international cooperation in oceanographic science and services.
