2.2 Reconnaissance to polar plateau

One of the logistic tasks of the XIX Indian Antarctic Expedition was to find a safe land route to Polar Plateau through Wholthat Mountains. A team of two members from Army Engineers was deputed in the team for this task. To start with, an aerial survey was conducted on 11th January 2000 and could reach up to 72o 14" South over Somaveken glacier. The aerial view of terrain appeared highly crevassed. In the second attempt, a safe route was marked westwards of Somaveken glacier and as many as 29 GPS positions were marked on map to undertake the land convoy. The land convoy with the help of two Piston Bulley Vehicles was undertaken on 27th February 2000 and a team of 7 members could reach a camp site at Gjeruldsenhogdo, after a continuous travel for about 20 hours covering 170 km. The team camped for night at this site and after winding up the camp on 28th travelled further South to 72o 11". Having found the terrain with gentle slope without any mountain range further, the convoy returned back to Maitri safely on 28th February 2000.
